A. An Academy is a state-maintained but independently run school which has the help of outside sponsors.

A. A report published in 2007 showed that GCSE results are improving in academies compared with the schools they replaced, and improving more quickly than in any other type of school. The results are even more impressive when pupils’ personal circumstances and prior attainment are taken into account. For the 36 academies that replaced underperforming schools, the proportion of pupils gaining five or more GCSEs at A* to C almost doubled, from 22 per cent in 2001 to 43.7 per cent in 2007.
