Year 11 Rugby League

The ‘Brave 9’

With injuries and illness The Sutton Academy Year 11 rugby league team could only field 9 players in their St Helens Cup fixture against St Aelred’s.

Despite this the Sutton lads played out of their skins and opening exchanges saw them getting the upper hand. Captain Ben Roberts (11KNN) and scrum half Liam Forrest (11JMI) cleverly pulled strings in the middle of park testing the Aelred’s defence.  Outnumbered but never outgunned the Sutton pack put in some shuddering hits most notably from Jack Grice (11MYK) who's relentless efforts on both attack and defence built platforms for inventive attacks and Captain Ben Roberts whose tackle count outweighed that of any player on the field. However the Sutton line was spread thinly across the Aelred’s home pitch and they took advantage of quick play the balls to open the scoring and go into the second half 6-0.

Sutton opened the scoring in the second half with great running from Matty Edwards (11KNN) and a well worked set piece, started by Scott Lyon (11EWD) through the hands of Liam Forrest and completed by Gregg Burrows (11KNN), Scott Lyon added the extras to level the score 6-6. The following collisions were now amongst the heaviest of the game, advantagous kick returns form the side stepping Neil  Weaver (11JMI), and hard yards from Callum Turner (11DKW) and Kurt Ashcroft (11KNN) took the game to Aelred’s but despite their best efforts the gaps in the depleted squad were too great and Aelred’s squeezed in a try on the blindside. With only minutes left the Sutton players were not about to lay down and a shot that would make every player and spectator wince was dished out by Matty Edwards and Ben Roberts.

Final Score St Aelreds 12-6 Sutton
