Year 11 Rugby League - Proud til the end!
20.04.2011The Year 11 team showed typical courage, respect and enthusiasm in a 'friendly' fixture against a big St Cuthbert's outfit.
Sutton dominated their opposition ruck and completed sets in the early exchanges with man machines Jack Grice and Adam Almond scattering the Cuthies defense. Captain Ben Roberts became a target for the struggling defense of the home side and was taken out by a horror challenge. Liam Forrest converted the resulting penalty but the influential captain was to play no further part in the game.
The quick witted Liam Forrest and hard grafting Jack Heath stepped up to the plate and tested Cuthies but errors and penalties cost the brave but tiring academy side. Despite hard hitting defense from Kurt Ashcroft and Curtis Rathbone and the well timed hits from Tony Newton coming in cleverly from fullback when the Sutton line needed him they began leaking points. True to form Sutton never gave an inch David Meacham, Jack York and Danny Carney all put their bodies on the line but defending back to back sets had taken its toll and Cuthies went in for another try.
In the last 15 minutes Jamie Allford skipped around the Cuthies markers and outsprinted the covering defense to go in for Suttons only try and Jack Heath added the extras.
"Despite the increasingly difficult scoreline Sutton did not lose hope, pride or respect for each other, that is what rugby league is all about and I am immensely proud of all the players." Final Score 18 - 8
