Year 7 visit Transport & Glass Museum

28.11.2011

The whole of Year 7 recently visited either the World of Glass or the
Transport museum to assist them in studies about the history of their home town St Helens.

At the World of Glass students found out about the industries which helped in the growth of the town and what it was like to work in the 19th century glassworks. They were also able to see a demonstration of glass blowing.  Horse drawn carriages to London Route master buses were some of the exhibits on display in the ransport museum and some of the exhibits had appeared in a number of TV series, such as Dr Who and Heartbeat.

During the visit students were able to experience what it is like to ride on buses dating back to the 1930s, as well as being a bus conductor issuing tickets from a range of ticket machines. Students were able to listen to the latest records played on an antique wind-up record player, which was a real novelty to many of the group who are more familiar with Ipods. A demonstration of how to start a vehicle using a starting handle ended the tour.

The visit to both museums has helped students develop their knowledge of the history of the town.  This will assist in projects they will be undertaking in the coming weeks. - Mr Davey
